The Carl Sandburg College women’s golf team made program history Monday as it won the Illinois College Invitational on Monday at Jacksonville Country Club. It’s the first time in school history the Chargers have won an event.

Sandburg shot 345 as a team to defeat host Illinois College by six strokes. Freshman Madison Newton (Erie, Ill./Erie) shot an 11-over-par 83 to tie for medalist honors and lead the Chargers, who this season also have set school records for lowest 18-hole score and lowest 36-hole score.

Hayley Guilinger (Thomson, Ill./West Carroll) and Jaeden Workman (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) each carded 85s for the Chargers, and Renee Scheider (Lena, Ill./Lena-Winslow) added a 92 for Sandburg’s fourth score.

The Chargers also got a 96 from Emily Franzoni (Canton, Ill./Canton), and freshman Kaylyn Stearns (Gilson, Ill./Knoxville) shot 115.
